Overview

Intent

At Fulbrook School we aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all students to succeed and adopt a love for sport and physical activity. We strive to stimulate our pupils through engaging and exciting Physical Education lessons that are accessible, enjoyable and challenging. We believe that pupils should have the opportunity within Physical Education to develop themselves physically, socially and emotionally. We want to teach pupils how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness, resilience and equity of play to embed life-long values. Fulbrook instils respect, tolerance and veneration of others and themselves through a diverse and comprehensive Physical Education curriculum.

The Fulbrook Physical Education department offer sensational extra-curricular opportunities during lunch times and after schools, which are open to all year groups. These give students the chance to develop their skills and techniques further and, if the students want to, they can represent the school at local fixtures and competitions that target pupils of all ages and abilities. Fixtures incorporate play, learn, develop and compete events that offer differ experiences and pathways post fixtures.

Implement

The Fulbrook Physical Education department pride themselves on delivering high quality lessons weekly. Our curriculum programme incorporates a diverse selection of sporting activities that is inclusive yet stimulating for all pupils. With well-structured lessons, students can engage and thrive within the subjects learning environment. Our PE curriculum is dynamic and transitional as the pupils move up through the school. In all lessons we embed fundamental skills, knowledge and principles across an extensive range of activities.

We recognise that PE lessons should be enjoyable so that our pupils can foster a lifelong passion for physical activity and sport. We encourage confidence and appreciation of their own ability and progression within PE. Teachers are experienced within a multitude of areas within the curriculum and are always endeavouring to learn new practices to augment their subject knowledge.

Impact

Our Physical Educational curriculum aims are to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of all pupils at Fulbrook School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Pupils are educated on self-discipline and are taught that to be successful within sport and physical activities, you need to take ownership and responsibility of your own health and fitness. Our goal is to encourage students to use these foundational skills in a self-directed and successful manner in order to live happy and healthy lives.

Aims for Physical Education at Fulbrook

  • For each student to enjoy being physically active and for them to adopt a lifelong passion for physical activity and sport.

  • Students develop their confidence and knowledge in a range of sports and physical activities. Pupils are given opportunities to lead, support and officiate in a range of physical activities.

  • Students develop a range of fundamental skills which can be applied across different physical activities and sport.

  • Experience a wide range of sports and physical activities in both lessons and extra-curricular clubs that fully enrich all students.

  • To promote inclusion and equity through sports and physical activity.

Football - Pupils complete a unit of football focussing on improving not only core skills learnt previously that include passing, dribbling, defending, shooting and positions but also their tactical awareness. There is a greater emphasis on the combination of skill development, gameplay, tactics, strategy and scenarios. Students are encouraged to officiate and coach within this unit.

Sport Education - A unit of work focussing on pupil’s development around sport. This includes assigning roles including team manager, equipment organiser, coach, fitness coach and referee. Developing pupil’s ethos of teamwork and fair play whilst competing with peers.

Handball – The unit of Handball will focus on the key skills needed to play the game which include, passing, dribbling, shooting and defending. Pupils will continue to develop their understanding of the game and the rules of the game. Tactics, positioning and officiating will also be addressed.

Netball - Pupils will focus on key skills such a passing, shooting, marking whilst adopting spatial awareness. Pupils cement the positions for 7-a-side Netball and the role/tactics of each position. Pupils will develop their understanding and decision making within this unit. Students can also umpire and coach within this unit.

Basketball - Pupils complete a unit of Basketball whilst concentrating and securing core skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Further development of decision making in game situations, defensive strategies and positioning will be addressed within practice and gameplay. Pupils should begin to officiate and support gameplay.

Trampolining - Trampolining will be introduced within lessons, with the focus on control and shapes/landings. Pupils continue to develop their core skills within such as jumping and rotating. Pupils can progress onto the different levels of trampolining and begin to use them in a 10-bounce routine.

Badminton – Pupils will gain an opportunity to work on the net/wall sport of Badminton. Pupils will develop their skillset and will move on to advanced shots within the sport and look at tactics within the game. Pupils will understand the rules of singles/doubles and will be able to officiate games.

Health Related Fitness - Improving pupils’ fitness through health-related activities. Pupils will complete various ways of exercise. Pupils will understand how exercise affects the body and the benefits of exercising. Some fitness testing (age appropriate).

Rugby - The Rugby unit will comprise of passing, running with the ball and handling the ball. Pupils will progress quickly onto Contact rugby where they recap about safety, tackling, rucks, mauls, kicking and scrums. Age specific play and rules integrated.

Rounders - The pupils will complete a Rounders unit that will recap key aspects such as throwing, catching, striking, fielding, detailed rules and gameplay. A variety of skills and games will allow pupils to progress effectively. Gameplay tactics and positioning will be key within this unit. Umpiring is introduced within this unit.

Athletics – Track - Pupils will complete age specific events within track Athletics. These include events such as 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and relay. Whilst doing so, pupils will start to link skill/physical components of fitness to each event.

Field - Pupils will continue to develop their understanding and ability on throwing and jumping events. These include long jump, triple jump, javelin, shotput and discus. Whilst doing so, pupils will start to link skill/physical components of fitness to each event.

1x a week

Cricket - Pupils will complete a Cricket unit of work that will recap on the key elements needed to play Cricket. These include throwing, catching, fielding, striking and the rules of Cricket. A variety of skills and games will allow pupils to progress effectively. Field positioning and batting/bowling tactics are reintroduced. Batting shots will become more specific. Umpiring is introduced within this unit.

Dodgeball - Pupils build upon their pre-existing skills and look at their consistency with catching, throwing, dodging and shooting at a target. Pupils will also focus again on gameplay and sportsmanship within this unit. Students begin to lead and umpire within this unit, whilst understanding the rules in detail.
