English

Overview

The skills that children develop enable them to continue to learn their whole life long. They help develop children as individuals and as participatory members of society.

Such skills ensure we can communicate and thereby connect with each other. Communication is the key to personal and career success.

Literacy skills determine a child’s ability to communicate effectively. The better they are at it, the better their quality of life will be. To that end, we encourage children to write to be understood, speak to be heard and read to grow.

In English, children are encouraged to become competent readers, writers and speakers.

A variety of literary and media texts are studied and used as stimulus for pupils' own work.  We aim to encourage wide reading interests, thereby equipping pupils with the rich source of vocabulary and expression necessary for creative writing. Children learn how to deliver speeches and participate in drama lessons and productions.

In addition, emphasis is placed on the formal teaching of correct spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar and presentation necessary for disciplined, well-structured written work.
