Personal Development and Careers
Intent
At Fulbrook, Personal Development is at the core of what is achieved at the school and enables students to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the ‘whole child’ intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through a whole-school approach to personal development, it is Fulbrook’s belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.
Personal Development is taught across the school from Years 5 - 8 and onwards on a weekly basis and as a school, the Jigsaw PSHE scheme is followed.
The Personal Development curriculum equips students with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever-changing society, the school is able to provide students with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of the Personal Development teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting the core values; Aspiration, Perseverance, Compassion, Respect, Responsibility and Trust.
Implementation
Fulbrook’s whole curriculum is shaped by the school’s vision, which aims to enable all students, regardless of background, ability and additional needs to flourish to become the very best version of themselves. Students are taught the national curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning.
Jigsaw PSHE directs the school’s aim of developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
Impact
By the time students leave Fulbrook they will have a:
- Ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.
- Good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships
- Appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society
- Strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others
